Today, I explored the neighborhood of De Pijp through street photography and graphic design. Photography always makes me notice small and often overlooked details of environments, and using this artform allowed me to orient myself in the neighborhood quickly. Walking around the De Pijp area, I started collecting images of signs, flyers, and packaging with typefaces that caught my interest. While many signs were similar to American signs on the main streets, having modern fonts, when I walked through smaller roads in the neighborhood I began to find signs with retro and vintage fonts in addition to signs giving a handcrafted feeling.
My exploration caused me to reflect on the importance of typography for the branding of a company and a consumer’s perspective. While a modern, sans serif typeface gives an impression of modernity and luxury, script typefaces feel welcoming and more approachable.
After exploring the neighborhood and collecting images, I created an alphabet poster using different letters in the images I had taken.
